Tercero Wines, where YOU are the expert.

Tucked away on a side street of the quaint, Santa Ynez Valley town of Los Olivos, sits the tasting room of Tercero Wines. It is intimate and unaffected, yet modern, boasting a captivating (and Instagramable), ombre wall of Tercero wine bottles. Most importantly, it serves up some distinctive and delicious wines.

Tercero offers mostly Rhone varietals, using grapes exclusively from small-lot vineyards in Santa Barbara County. Owner, Larry Shaffer’s curiosity as a winemaker, however, calls him to experiment with a sampling of other grapes as well as innovative wine-making techniques, producing several delightfully unique blends and varietals. Shaffer’s creative, wine-crafting prowess is top-notch, but he is equally focused on, and intrigued by, his patrons.

Step inside the tasting room and you will immediately recognize that your wine tasting is all about you. There are no stuffy airs or condescending attitudes at Tercero (which is named after his freshman dorm at UC Davis). Larry Shaffer wants to hear what you have to say about his wine. From past experience (I may smell saddle leather, while you may smell leather handbag) to how you like your coffee (black, with cream or with sugar), he explores what influences your palette and why you may taste a certain element that the person sitting next to you may not. No matter what you taste or smell, in Shaffer’s opinion, you are RIGHT! His innate curiosity about people, is apparent in his desire to make new and interesting wines…and Larry Shaffer is doing just that.

Tercero wines are lively, drinkable and unquestionably, satisfying. Thank you Tercero…we are still enjoying every single sip!
