Four Lanterns Winery: Catering to all Five Senses

Driving onto the Four Lanterns Winery & Vineyard property, you immediately know you are in for a treat. Guests are greeted by the rustic barn tasting room, a sweeping garden lawn dotted with teak tables and shaded by a canopy of oak trees, all set along side a charming, yellow, farm house, which is available as a rental booked directly through the winery. The setting is beautiful, relaxed and welcoming. And the owners, Jackie & Steve Gleason, like their wines are approachable and open.

Having moved to Paso Robles from Orange County after visiting the area for many years, the Gleasons gave up corporate life, to follow a passion of making delicious wines and working for themselves. Four Lanterns, named after Jackie’s & Steve’s four daughters, is situated on 35 acres in the Willow Creek District on the west side of Paso, which is known for its hot days, cool nights and calcareous soil, making it ideal for growing and making balanced and complex wines. Four Lanterns Winery is doing just that!

Jackie & Steve are also focused on enhancing their guest’s sensory experience. Wine, in general, has the unique ability to captivate the senses, at once engaging sight, smell, taste, and touch. And let's not forget the delightful sound of a cork being drawn or of wine cascading into a glass. At Four Lanterns, however, they elevate our auditory sense experience by pairing each wine with a specific song. Jackie and Steve's innovative approach adds a new dimension to wine appreciation and I’m hear for it!

Steve explains that he learned this technique during a tasting class where the instructor had students taste the same flight of wines over and over while playing a different song each round. The class found that a certain varietal would stand out when the specifically paired song would play, and he found he enjoyed the aromas and flavors of each wine more while listening to the complimentary song.

It’s hard to beat pairing a bottle of wine with the perfect meal. And each wine has it’s own vibe begging for a certain occasion, season, time of day or mood for drinking that wine. Really, why should pairing that wine with a similar vibe of music be any different?
