Common Thread Wines: Embracing the Nature of Things

David Baird, Owner and Winemaker of Common Thread Wines is at the forefront of natural winemaking and he’s doing more than just producing exceptional wines. He is dedicated to crafting clean wines that not only taste great and pair beautifully with food, but also make a positive impact on the community. Each year, Common Thread donates 10% of its proceeds to organizations that support individuals with special needs, reflecting his commitment to contributing to the greater good.

The inspiration behind this mission is deeply personal. In 2016, David’s son, Colin, was diagnosed with Down syndrome at just six months old. This life-changing moment ignited Baird’s passion to make the world a better and more inclusive place for individuals like his son. This drive to effect positive change is woven into the fabric of the winery's philosophy and practices.

David’s winemaking journey began in 2006 while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Over the years, he worked alongside some of the best winemakers in California’s Central Coast, honing his craft and developing a unique style. The dream of creating his own wines was always present, but it wasn't until 2021 that he took the leap to start his own wine brand, Common Thread. The name of the brand holds special significance, reflecting a shared physical trait—a single palmar crease on the left hand—Baird and his two sons possess. This crease is a physical marker often associated with Down syndrome, and it symbolizes the deep connection between father and sons.

Sourcing locally, Common Thread works with growers who are committed to environmental stewardship. Whether organically certified or grown sustainably, the grapes used in their wines reflect the highest standards of quality and care for the land.

Baird’s approach to winemaking is as natural as possible, utilizing only native yeast, minimal sulfites, and no other additives. His innovative techniques—such as skin-fermenting white varieties, whole-cluster fermentations, and incorporating dried stems for added structure—result in wines that may appear slightly cloudy. For those unfamiliar with natural wines, this might seem unusual, but rest assured, Common Thread’s winemaking practices allow the grapes to fully express their unique characteristics, producing wines that are distinctive, full of character, and free from anything unnecessary.

What does this mean for you, Winos? Wines that not only taste great while you enjoy them but also leave you feeling great next day! Common Thread’s commitment to natural and sustainable winemaking, along with their dedication to giving back to the community, ensures that each bottle not only delights the palate but also makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Cheers!
